Dr. Buchanan is a board certified in general neurology as well as in clinical neurophysiology, with an added qualification in electroencephalography (EEG) for the evaluation of epilepsy.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Neuroscience from Princeton University. This was followed by a master’s degree in Physiology followed by medical school at the Chicago Medical School. During his period he was involved in research and authored several papers and scientific posters in various areas of neurology and neuroscience, including migraine headaches, epilepsy, movement disorders, and pediatric neurology.
Dr. Buchanan completed his Internal Medicine internship, Neurology residency, and fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at the University of Utah. He then practiced for 3 years in the Salt Lake City area while his wife finished graduate school.
Dr. Buchanan grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, but now has family mostly in Utah and elsewhere in the lower 48. He moved to Vernal, Utah, to bring high quality neurology care to eastern Utah, as well as to live in an area with easy access to the outdoors. In his spare time, he enjoys taking his family hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities.
Dr. Buchanan is currently accepting new patients and accepts most insurance plans. Dr. Buchanan speaks Spanish. Although he sees primarily adult patients, he will also see school age children with epilepsy as well.
